There are a lot of phone and email scams happening at the moment. Scammers purport to be representing the ATO. Two clients have recently been targetted by phone scammers.
We have received fraudulent emails asking for client information. These emails have been referred to the fraud investigation team in the ATO.
We do receive genuine calls from the ATO from time to time asking about a client but we decided some time ago not to take these calls any more. Unless it is from a person known to us, we request call back details and check the legitimacy of the number before calling back.
My advice: NEVER ACCEPT A CALL OR RESPOND TO AN EMAIL PURPORTING TO BE FROM THE ATO.
If you receive a call please take down call-back details and refer it to our office. Under no circumstances disclose any personal information, especially your Tax File Number. Also, do not click on any links in emails purporting to be from the ATO.
If you have any queries about your status with the ATO, please just refer them to me.
